Kaiser Adds Workers to CASA

One of the core values of Kaiser Permanente is to improve the health of the community.  Since 1945, this nonprofit health plan, with headquarters in Oakland, California has served the health care needs of its members.  Today, it encompasses Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and the Permanente Medical Groups, and it has an affiliation with Group Health Cooperative, based in Seattle, Washington.  This group’s efforts provide its members and other community agencies, “The Power to Change”; as its motto suggests.

Recently Kaiser Permanente provided the Child Abuse Prevention Council the power to change the lives of children in San Joaquin County’s foster care system.  Kaiser Permanente has provided a grant that will allow the CAPC’s Court Appointed Special Advocates Program to double the number of children it serves.

The CASA program provides trained volunteers to advocate for children in the foster care system.  During permanency placement, CASA volunteers act as the voice of the child.  Our volunteers meet with the child assigned to them regularly.  They also coordinate with all the professionals and family members involved in the case.  CASA volunteers talk to social workers, health professionals, school administrators and teachers, foster families and biological families to make sure the interests of the child are being represented until the child can be placed in a permanent home.  The CASA provides the much needed link between those providing physical, mental, and emotional, care for the child. The CASA volunteer also prepares court reports to inform the County Judges of the needs of each child during this crucial time.

Until the grant from the Kaiser Foundation, only one Case Manager handled all the CASA cases in San Joaquin County.  With the help of Kaiser the CAPC has been able to hire an additional full-time Case Manager to double the amount of CASA volunteers that can be trained and children that can be assisted.  Kaiser’s focus on the vulnerable populations of our community has Given us the POWER TO CHANGE lives!
